The Basics of Rhino Grasshopper

Learn the basics of algorithmic modelling using Rhino Grasshopper.

Grasshopper is a graphical algorithm editor for designers who are exploring new shapes using generative algorithms. It is integrated with Rhino’s 3D modeling tools but requires low knowledge of programming or scripting and is developed by Robert McNeel & Associates.

Course content

Rhino basics

  • Software Interface
  • Create basic graphic objects—lines, circles, arcs, curves, solids, and surfaces
  • Model with precision using coordinate input, object snaps, and SmartTrack tools
  • Modify curves and surfaces with edit commands and Gumball
  • Use control point editing to modify curves and surfaces
  • Display any portion of the model
  • Export and import models to and from different file formats
  • Dimension and annotate model

Grasshopper basics

  • Software Interface
  • Using parameters
  • Creating Geometry
  • Transformation & Morphing

Prerequisite

No Rhino skills are required to attend this course. Rhinoceros 3D 6 must be installed. Free Evaluation version is available at https://www.rhino3d.com/download for 90 days.
