The purpose of the side event is to highlight the importance of reliable forest-related information in policy-making at all levels. Finland’s National Forest Inventory is celebrating its first century, which makes this side event particularly timely. In the event, we will also share Finland’s experience in supporting forest information through development policy. Lastly, the global work on developing forest information will be presented by FAO.

Celebrating 100 Years of Forest Inventories in Finland
Principal Scientist Kari T Korhonen, Natural Resources Institute Finland
Dr. Korhonen has led and helped to develop Finland’s National Forest Inventory since 2004, and takes also actively part to the related international work.
Supporting Forest Information through Development Policy
Senior Forest Sector Adviser Vesa Kaarakka, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Finland
Dr. Kaarakka has strong scientific and practical background in tropical silviculture, and has since 2008 helped to shape Finland’s development policy in forestry and related sectors.
Global Work on Developing Forest Information
Deputy Director Tiina Vähänen, Food and Agriculture Organization
Deputy Director Vähänen has over 20 years experience on United Nations’ forest-related work, and is currently Deputy Director at the FAO’s Forestry Division.
