The Language Bank of Finland stores and processes language resources, and manages access rights, at CSC (CSC - IT Center for Science). Are you interested in using the computational environment at CSC for processing language resources? Do you want to know more about our resources and how to use them in your research? We're giving a fully remote course on 20.-21.6. on these topics. If you're new to using CSC's infrastructure, this course is an excellent opportunity to get started: there'll be a support session on 14.6. for attendees who want to make sure they have user accounts and the technical ability to use CSC resources.
If you do research or education in a Finnish institute of higher education or research institute, using CSC resources and this course is free of charge.
The two-day course includes:
- The basics of computational research using language resources
- What language resources are available, and what is their technical layout
- How to get access, and what are you allowed to do
- What solutions are available for handling sensitive data
- How to run jobs on CSC hardware, both from the point of view of setting up your environment and running computationally intensive jobs
We will go though a mini-project from data to results. This includes browsing language resources, accessing them on a suitable computing environment, preprocessing, processing and reviewing results. We will discuss management of data and the execution environment.
Before the course you will need a valid user account at CSC, know how to log in to the MyCSC service and use it to manage project memberships and apply for resources. You can read about this at https://docs.csc.fi/accounts/, but registered attendees will be mailed instructions, and there will be a pre-course support session as well.
We will be using the Python programming language and some computational methods that you may not be familiar with, but they are not prerequisites per se. We will try to make the course material accessible without prior experience with programming in this domain.
If there are attendees who don't speak Finnish, the course will be held in English, and otherwise in Finnish. The online course platform is Zoom.
