EPOS ON Muography Standardisation Workshop

Oulu, Finland & online | 28–29 September 2026

The EPOS ON Muography Standardisation Workshop brings together the muography community, research-infrastructure experts and data specialists to discuss how muography data could become more interoperable, comparable and reusable across research and applied environments.

The workshop will focus on terminology, metadata, data and product description, uncertainty, reporting practices, and possible pathways for integrating muography datasets and services into the EPOS research infrastructure.

Participation is possible both onsite in Oulu and online.

09:00–09:15 – Welcome and workshop objectives
Introduction to the workshop, its background and expected outcomes.

09:15–10:00 – EPOS, EPOS ON and research data integration
Invited presentation from EPOS covering EPOS data organisation and policy, FAIR data, metadata and interoperability, Thematic Core Services, and possible pathways for integrating muography datasets and services into the EPOS platform.

10:00–10:30 – Muography towards an interoperable geoscientific observational method
Overview of current standardisation needs, experience from EPOS ON and MUOGRAPHERS 2026, and the distinction between standardising data interfaces and outputs rather than detector technologies or proprietary methods.

10:30–11:00 – Coffee break

11:00–11:45 – Defining the scope of muography standardisation
Structured discussion on what should be standardised, what could be harmonised through guidance, and what should remain method-specific. Topics include terminology, measurement context, calibration, uncertainty, metadata, data and product levels, reporting and interoperability.

11:45–12:30 – Current practices and candidate concepts
Short contributions and discussion from different muography application areas, including geoscience, mining, infrastructure and underwater muography, with emphasis on current data, calibration, reporting and metadata practices.

12:30–13:30 – Lunch

13:30–14:30 – Breakout session: Towards a common muography information model
Small-group work on minimum metadata, terminology, measurement context, calibration, uncertainty, provenance, product levels and requirements for future interoperability and research-infrastructure integration.

14:30–15:00 – Breakout results and joint discussion
Presentation and consolidation of the main findings, areas of agreement and unresolved issues.

15:00–15:30 – Coffee break

15:30–16:15 – From community practice to standardisation and research-infrastructure integration
Discussion on community guidelines, possible formal standardisation, EPOS integration, working-group arrangements and links to future international muography activities.

16:15–16:45 – Roadmap and next steps
Identification of priority topics, possible pilot activities, responsible actors and milestones for continued work during 2027–2028.

16:45–17:00 – Conclusions and closing

Expected outcomes

The workshop aims to establish:

• a preliminary scope for muography standardisation;
• an outline of minimum metadata and information requirements;
• a preliminary pathway for possible integration of muography data and services into EPOS;
• a roadmap for continued community work and future standardisation activities.
